homoeopathy and the vital force

What is the Vital Force?

Homoeopaths use the term Vital Force to refer to the basic life energy of an organism, which manages all the various systems of a living body (organs, emotions, mind). It is both a physical presence and an energetic one, possessing qualities of both. It is the difference between a rock and a human, a corpse and a living body. It is the presence you can see behind the eyes of a creature that is alive. It exists in the material world and the spiritual world, and its highest purpose is to keep a living thing healthy and alive.

Why is the Vital Force so important to Homoeopathy?

The process of creating the specific medicines used in Homoeopathy dilutes the physical substance to a point where it is no longer measurable. Yet these medicines have even more power to heal than they original substance they were created from. Homoeopaths see this process (called 'Potentization') as a method of transforming physical matter into its energetic or spiritual counterpart. As such, the medicines are more like the Vital Force and have a more profound effect upon it. Used properly, this effect can be to stimulate very significant healing, far beyond what other therapies are able to create.

Your Vital Force is what you are, who you are, at a very deep level. It is the true source of health and happiness, and when out of order, it is the true source of disease. Only be correcting imbalances at this primal level, can true cure be brought about.

How does Homoeopathy perceive the Vital Force?

Since any disturbance in the Vital Force will create ripples in any system, possibly every system, that it touches, Homoeopathy examines every aspect of a person's life looking for those changes relating to the internal imbalance. In this way, Homoeopathy is a true Holistic system of medicine, seeing all things as connected, seeing all things as part of one thing, part of the one person. In order to understand how the Vital Force is suffering, you must try to understand how the person is suffering, rather than just how a particular body part is suffering. Even when a disease is affecting one area primarily (like a cough), a Homoeopath will look at those things relating to the person with the cough - their mood, their sleep, their appetite, their body language, their sensitivities. By doing this, the source of the cough, the weakness allowing it to become an ongoing problem, is addressed and healing follows both naturally and permanently.

What happens when the Vital Force is not part of the healing equation?

Put quite simply, there is no permanent cure. When a single disease, or even a single symptom, is specifically eliminated without correcting the power behind that disease or symptom, the Vital Force will recreate the disease either in the same place, or in a different more serious location. This is what Homoeopath's call Suppression, the driving of disease deeper into the organism. It is very common to see people treated for one thing, then another, then another, finally present with a disease that is incurable. Our society is full of people who have ended up this way. The Vital Force is left in disorder, constantly recreating diseases wherever it can find a weakness in the person.

It is important to understand something about Homoeopathy's understanding of Disease, Health and the role of Symptoms. Since the Vital Force is ultimately trying to keep you alive, your symptoms are actually an adaption to internal or external conditions. With the underlying imbalance being within the animating energy of a living thing, symptoms act as a vent for this internal pressure. Removing the symptoms without relieving the pressure, causes that pressure to intensify and continually look for new vents. At some point, the whole thing explodes (or perhaps implodes is more appropriate). Homoeopathy works from the inside out, calming things at the centre, allowing the disturbed energy to be safely vented.
